Online Course Reboot (OCR): Elevate Your Online Teaching

Redesign with purpose. Teach with confidence. Get rewarded for innovation.

Join us for the Online Course Reboot, a dynamic half-day professional development event hosted by SIU Online Extended Campus (SIU OEC) and the Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE). This hands-on workshop is designed to help faculty refresh, refine, and realign their online courses to ensure powerful student learning experiences — all within the D2L platform.

Faculty participants can earn up to $1,000 in stipends for applying evidence-based course design strategies and completing key deliverables.

Application Deadline: Friday, May 9 (end of day)
Virtual Workshop Date: May 21, 9:00 am - 12 p.m.* (link to workshop will be mailed to participants)

Why Participate?

The Online Course Reboot is more than a workshop — it’s an opportunity to:

  • Boost student success through clear, aligned learning outcomes and assessments.
  • Enhance your course quality using best practices in online pedagogy.
  • Earn stipends while making meaningful course improvements.
  • Collaborate with peers and receive one-on-one support from instructional designers.

This initiative directly supports SIU’s mission to deliver high-quality, consistent, and engaging online learning experiences.

Who Should Apply?

We invite full-time and adjunct faculty who:

  • Are teaching online or hybrid courses in Fall 2025.
  • Are developing a new course or revamping an existing one.
  • Have not received a Course Development Grant for the same course.

Proposed Agenda (subject to change)

Time Session What You'll Learn
9:00–10:00 Online Pedagogy & Assessment Design Foundational session on course alignment, backward design, and integrating assessments.
10:00–10:30 Showcase of Effective Assessments Real examples from SIU faculty showing alignment of assessments with course SLOs.
10:30–11:30 Hands-On Course Design Breakout groups to work directly in D2L with support from experts.
11:30–12:00 Wrap-Up & Deliverables Overview Final Q&A and guidance on next steps to earn your stipends.
Stipends: Earn as You Elevate

Faculty can earn two $500 stipends, one in August and another in December, by completing the following deliverables:

August Deliverables:

  • D2L Course Shell
    Uses the SIU Online template with:

  • Clearly stated SLOs
  • Formative & summative assessments
  • Regular Substantive Interaction (RSI)
  • Syllabus
    • Directs students to use D2L for all submissions
    • Integrates SLOs and assessment alignment
  • SLO Integration
    • Learning outcomes listed in both syllabus & D2L
    • Explicit links between assessments and SLOs

December Deliverables:

  • Peer Reviews

  • Review up to two courses using a modified OSCQR rubric
  • Offer constructive, actionable feedback

  • Self-Reflection & Action Plan

  • Submit a brief summary (2–3 paragraphs) on course modifications after teaching

  • Access to a D2L Q&A Hub and sample documents
